Topic: Development of Drugs for Rare or "Orphan" Diseases
On Monday, March 7th, 2016 at 6 PM, the Interdisciplinary Studies Program and Council of Majors has invited James Valentine, a UMBC alumni, to speak about drugs and the FDA regulatory framework. The title of his lecture is “Challenges and Opportunities in the Development of Drugs for Rare or ‘Orphan’ Diseases.” The Shriver Center is a co-sponsor of the event.
James Valentine is a food and drug lawyer, who has an interdisciplinary perspective on drug development. Mr. Valentine integrates the applied fields of biomedical science, research methods and statistics, public policy and law, and healthcare and public health, among others. Mr. Valentine’s concern is the therapeutic disparity in the medications available for known “rare” diseases that affect 200,000 or fewer patients in the United States
The evening begins at 5:45 PM with comments in University Center 310, followed by a 6 PM lecture and the dinner reception. At 7 PM, Mr. Valentine will conclude his lecture and engage in roundtable discussions with audience members.
