2021-2022 Leadership: Peer Mentors and Resident Assistant

Hey everyone! My name is Thomas (like the train) and I am from Prince George’s County, Maryland! I am a rising senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Financial Economics with a certificate in Finance. This year, I will be serving as the Resident Assistant (RA) on the amazing Shriver Living Learning Community and I can confidently say that I am proud to be a member of this community. Two years ago, I served as a peer mentor, and last year, I was the RA, so it’s clear I can’t see myself leaving!

I have a passion for advocating for underrepresented students and I am always searching for a way to help my community. For the past two years, I have been volunteering for UMBC’s Choice Program College Night where I work with students from different communities of Baltimore. I have loved every second I’ve spent volunteering for this influential program and I plan to return this academic school year. My experience on the Shriver Floor has given me transferable skills that has given me the confidence and courage to pursue different opportunities to help jump start my career in finance.

In the future, I plan to hold the positions as an American businessman, author, motivational speaker, investor, and family man. My favorite thing to do is going on adventures and going to the movies! I am an avid believer in the power of one’s mind and I love spreading positive energy. My favorite quote is: “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”

I am looking forward to a new year on the Shriver Floor and I am excited to meet you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Jack (or Jackson, doesn’t really matter) Corcoran and I am a rising sophomore from right here in Catonsville, Maryland. I am pursuing a B.A. in Political Science, and am exploring a bunch of minors, although I am undeclared. I am very, very excited to hopefully get back to normal with our service sites and classes, and I am very much looking forward to seeing all my other Shriver members in person! I am also a member of the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program. For my freshman year, I served at Relay Elementary for the spring and fall semester, serving different roles within the online school format. Being a part of the Shriver LLC has really cemented the importance of service in my eyes and I hope to pursue a career where I can help others through service, especially if I am able to work with children, something I loved doing during my time at Relay.

In my free time, I love watching movies and TV shows, hanging out with my friends, family, and dogs, cooking and baking, and, my most favorite activity of all, yelling at my TV during sports games (apologies to my future roommates).

Hey y’all! My name is Jada Sanders. I am a rising sophomore and one of your peer mentors this year! I am pursuing a B.A. in Political Science on a pre-law track, with an interest in a Law and Justice or African Studies minor. I am so excited to meet each and everyone one of you and work in a supportive and collaborative community. As a freshman, I volunteered with the Sherman Literacy Fellows Program at the Bay Brook Elementary School location. Being a part of Shriver has taught me the importance of serving the community, while also creating a space for people from different backgrounds to feel safe and heard. I am so grateful to have been a member of the Shriver LLC and now a peer mentor!

Just a little bit more about me: I am from Howard County, Maryland. I love listening to music (especially r&b and rap), watching movies from the 80s-90s era and of course today’s films, and trying different foods with my friends or family. I can’t wait to see and get to know all of you!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Shriver family!!! My name is Shakira Scott-Harris, I often go by Kira, and I am sophomore double majoring in Health Administration and Policy and Political Science. I am on a Pre-law track as well as a Health policy track. As a freshman on the floor, I was one of the few shriver members on campus and despite the virtual classroom setting, we were able to make it worthwhile and I can not wait to meet you all on the floor and share similar experiences!!

This past year, I volunteered with Sherman Early Literacy Fellows at Bay Brook Elementary. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Shriver floor. I have made very close friendships and my peer mentors were very helpful, skillful and understanding people which inspired me to be a peer mentor as well. As you are all coming into the Shriver community, I want you to be open and willing to experiencing new things. I was a very routine person, but I learned to branch beyond what I believed was capable in which I discovered new passions. Find yourselves!

Hi everybody!! My name is Nyla Howell and I am a rising sophomore. I am currently pursuing a B.A. in Geographic and Environmental Studies, a B.A. in Sociology, and a certificate in Geographic Information Systems (I promise it’s not as complicated as it seems lol). During my Freshman year, I was the Student Coordinator and an executive board member for Retriever Essentials Food Pantry on UMBC’s campus. I had a great time being able to serve and give hope to people during such a time of need and despair. I am looking forward to continuing this role during the upcoming school year. Being a member of the Shriver Floor greatly added to my Freshman year experience. It has made me more comfortable in who I am, helped develop my leadership skills, and gave me a supportive and welcoming community to be apart of during a tough year. I am looking forward to helping the 2021-22 Shriver floor have an even better freshman year at UMBC than I did!

A bit more about me: I am from Prince George’s (PG) County, Maryland! I am a little bit obsessed with the weather, The Office, and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream. I like to listen to music (r &b), read, watch movies, and eat good food. I also really like to travel even though I haven’t been able to do as much because of the pandemic but hopefully that’ll change next year ! I can’t wait to meet all of you and get to experience a post-COVID college experience with you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Madeline Goldstein and I am looking forward to being one of your peer mentors! I am a rising sophomore with a major in Biochemistry and minor in Spanish. In addition to being a peer mentor, I am also part of the Honors College and Phi Sigma Sigma. This past year, I have partnered with Relay Elementary School, where in the Fall I was able to create asynchronous projects for the students. In the Spring, I was able to join the virtual “Lunch Bunches” where I had virtual activities planned for the students. The most important thing I learned throughout my time working with Relay Elementary was to make the most of everything. I had such a great experience working with the students and creating a fun atmosphere for them despite the virtual setting. I loved every moment and learning about each student. There are so many aspects at each service site that you can take with you throughout your academic and professional career. Make the most of it!

A bit more about me: I am from Washington County, Maryland. I love to workout, travel, watch Netflix and hangout with my friends. I look forward to meeting you all soon!!

Hi everyone! My name is Olivia Prouty and I am a rising sophomore and one of your peer mentors for the Shriver LLC for this upcoming school year! I use she, her, hers pronouns. I’m pursing a B.A in Mathematics, a Masters in Secondary Education and a Spanish minor. I am also a Sherman Scholar. I served this past year with the Sherman Literacy Fellows Program at Curtis Bay Elementary School. I can’t wait to see everyone either in-person or virtually this fall. Being a part of Shriver has been an amazing addition to my college experience thus far. I’m so thankful for all my experiences through the Sherman Literacy Fellows Program. I’m so excited to be a Peer Mentor this year! My experiences with my peer mentor helped me find a community at UMBC and I hope I can do the same. My favorite piece if advice I received when starting at UMBC was to be open to all the opportunities coming your way and I want to share that with all of you.

A little bit more about myself: I’m from Montgomery County, MD. I love to cook, swim, and go to concerts. I am so excited to work with you all this coming school year and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Hi! My name is Jadyn and I’m a rising sophomore double majoring in Economics and Political Science and minoring in Law and Justice and Entrepreneurship. I’m not totally sure what I want to do with any of that, but potentially law school and criminal defense. This past year, I volunteered virtually at Relay Elementary School, but hopefully this year I’ll be able to do in person work at BARCS animal shelter or something environmental. I love dogs , hiking, and working out. Outside of school and those interests, I spend a lot of time working as a barista and a waitress, and I will probably continue one or both of these jobs this school year.
