Work with youth after-schoool
Are you an education or social science major looking for hands-on experience working with youth? Artistic? Have some hobbies you’d like to work on or share? Walden Circle Community Center (WCCC) offers an afterschool program to 30 children in Woodlawn, MD. We provide activity spaces, snacks, and tutoring.
Responsibilities and Duties Student Coordinators and Service Learners will be responsible for working with a particular age group (K-2, 3-4, or 5-6) of elementary students in small groups of 5. Coordinators will help distribute after-school meals or snacks and transition students to complete homework.
Service Learners are responsible for providing guidance and enrichment for school work during this first hour. Hour two consists of leisure activities including but not limited to board games, outdoor recreation, arts & crafts, or other themes activities that are planned during the school year.
Qualifications
Must be committed and enthusiastic and have some experience working with youth. Candidates must also submit a background check which can be completed on campus at the UMBC police office.
Expected Commitment
Student Coordinators and Service Learners can choose anywhere between 1 and 5 days to participate with Walden Circle. Work hours are 3-6 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will be expected to maintain consistent attendance through the end of the semester but you will not report on holidays or snow days.
Other details
Though this is an informal setting for after-school participants, training and guidance on classroom management will be provided. Lesson plans will be provided but Student Coordinators will also be responsible for creating alternative plans and/or tailoring lessons to varied abilities and work styles. Walden Circle is located in Woodlawn, MD and is about 15 minutes from UMBC. Transportation to and from the site is provided through the Shriver Center.
