Click on "View on myUMBC" to see the accompanying picture, which features 2013 UMBC Alum, Maia Barber (Psychology).  Maia was very active in Service-Learning through The Choice Program's College Night and then in a leadership role with The Choice Education Team at Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts.  Upon graduation from UMBC, she was selected as a Choice Fellow, and served for a year in this AmeriCorps-connected program with The Choice Education Team at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School.  Maia currently serves as a Youth Development Specialist at Pride Youth Services and is in the process of applying to graduate school to become a school counselor.  Her service-learning experiences broadened her skill set and professional network. 

The Shriver Center's active partnerships continue to grow (some 20+ years to include MS Swim at the Catonsville YMCA, Saint Agnes Hospital, and The Choice Program).  Each year, we receive more requests from nonprofits and schools to host enthusiastic and talented UMBC students at their organizations.  UMBC students and faculty facilitate some of these new partnerships.  Below you will find the 096 Community Service & Learning Practicum Syllabus which outlines expectations to include weekly, consistent service and several reflective activities. 

Many our our youth-based community partners have significant openings - all can be found on the attached our Spring 2016 Service Chart.  When we mention "Monday-Thursday," it means the site operates Monday through Thursday, NOT that you have to volunteer all of those days:

• Walden Circle: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 2:45-6:30 pm
• The Commodore to College Project:  Monday - Thursday, 1:45-4pm; Friday, 1:30-3:30 pm
• Young Explorers at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School: Monday-Thursday, 2:30-6 pm
• College Gardens: Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday (Wednesday is now full), 2:30-5:30 pm
  

Refer to the Spring 2016 Service Chart, which goes into detail about all of the aforementioned sites. Some of these sites have transportation (travel time built in), some do not.  This chart will continue to be updated at http://shrivercenter.umbc.edu/096-community-service-learning-practicum/ .  In some cases, you can contact the program leads directly.

Spring 2016 Registration closes by the end of February.  You can set up a time to meet by either stopping into The Shriver Center, 1st Floor Public Policy (just past the elevators) 8:30am-5pm, or call (410) 455-2493. We do our best to accommodate drop ins, but we cannot guarantee staff availability.
