Community Partner Name:

The Maryland Food Bank

Partner Representative:

Jill Rowlett , Volunteer Program Manager

Describe the issue area(s) that your organization addresses.

The Maryland Food Bank addresses hunger in Maryland and all issues surrounding hunger. We distributed nearly 37 million pounds of food to over 1,200 partner agencies across the state.

What do you consider your community's greatest strengths?

Our community is a strong one. It is always amazing to see people come together to tackle an issue and rise together for a cause. We are lucky to see that everyday at our facility. Volunteers love being here and they know they are helping fight hunger in MD.

Who does your organization bring to the community?

Not only to we distribute nearly 37 million pounds of food to hungry Marylanders, but we also offer ways for community members to get involved. Whether it is volunteering or conducting a food drive, anyone can participate in ending hunger.

What are meaningful ways that the UMBC community can work together to impact the community?

UMBC is a great partner AND neighbor. MFB's proximity to UMBC makes it extremely convenient for students and staff to volunteer. We have ongoing volunteer opportunities and occasional special events when we need volunteers.

How did you get involved with this type of work?

After living abroad, I knew that I wanted a job where I was making a difference. During my travels, I saw so much poverty but I knew that people in my own backyard needed assistance too. I began my career in non-profits 8 years ago and there is not a day when I regret that decision.
