This study explores whether a mindfulness and yoga program improves urban public school students' ability to cope with stress and reduces use of drugs and alcohol. The study includes 250 fifth and sixth grade students across six Baltimore City schools; these students will be followed from 2011 - 2013. Three schools received the mindfulness program last year, and the other three schools served as comparisons. The mindfulness program was developed by The Holistic Life Foundation, a Baltimore-based non-profit organization that promotes positive development among urban youth. This is an exciting opportunity to study the effects of mindfulness and yoga on children, a new research area that is gaining attention. Learn more about our team's previous research and about the Holistic Life Foundation in the article and video clip on NBC's African American news website, the Grio:  http://www.thegrio.com/health/yogaurban-schools.php

The primary responsibility is to assist in conducting assessments with participating students (they are now in the 6th and 7th grades) and their teachers at 6 Baltimore City Schools. Student assessments include surveys, as well as cognitive tests and physical measures (blood pressure, balance, lung capacity).

Preferred schedule – in order to work with students’ course load, flexibility is advantageous; a range of options is appreciated, but please be specific about any event or attendance requirements that are not negotiable. Please state hours of operation.

We will be conducting assessments in Baltimore City Schools from ~7:30am-2:30pm Mondays through Fridays. Availability to work these hours during at least ONE weekday is required for the position.

Course credit may be provided if feasible. Transportation costs will be reimbursed.

This is a great opportunity to learn first-hand about research with relevance for public health and psychology. Research assistants will gain valuable skills for conducting assessments with youth and adults and will learn key concepts about the design and implementation of school-based randomized prevention trials.
