Department of State Internships are full-time opportunities (40 hours per week), lasting at least 10 consecutive weeks, during the following seasons: Summer: May - August Fall: September - December Spring: January - April Summary: The U.S. Department of State is the lead institution for the conduct of American diplomacy and the Secretary of State is the President's principal foreign policy advisor. The women and men of the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service and Civil Service support the Secretary of State and the formulation and implementation of U.S. Foreign Policy. The Foreign Service is a corps of more than 12,000 employees dedicated to representing America abroad and responding to the needs of American citizens living and traveling around the world. The Department's Civil Service, totaling more than 9,000 employees, provides continuity and expertise in accomplishing all aspects of the Department's mission. Internships with the Department of State offer U.S. citizen college, university, and graduate school students an opportunity to experience the work of our Foreign and Civil Service careers first hand. Whether you work at Department of State headquarters in Washington D.C. or at one of our 265-plus embassies and consulates around the world, you will help the Department in our efforts to shape a freer, more secure, and more prosperous world. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Please view the Department of State Internship Brochure to learn more about the many of the different bureaus and offices which accept interns, and how your education might apply to the work of the Department of State. Types of Internships Domestic and Overseas: About half of the internships are domestic, located mostly in Washington D.C., with a limited number of positions available at Department of State offices in other U.S. cities. The other half are at U.S. embassies and consulates overseas.

Unpaid and Paid: The majority of Department of State internships are unpaid. Depending on available funding, the Department may offer a limited number of centrally-funded paid internships to students with demonstrated financial need. To determine financial need the Department looks at the Student Aid Report (SAR), which must include the candidate's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number.
