Attention Pre-Med Majors- Mentor High School Youth via/MERIT

Mentor for Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens

MERIT (Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens) seeks UMBC Students Mentors.

The goal of MERIT is to identify Baltimore City's highest performing high school sophomores who have the potential and desire to attend medical school, and provide a variety of resources to help propel them on that trajectory.  The opportunities we provide include professionalism seminars, two summer internships (at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital), weekly SAT tutoring, and college admissions guidance.

Another key component to the MERIT program is our mentors who serve as motivators and longitudinal support systems for the MERIT Scholars from the time the Scholars are inducted into MERIT through their high school graduation.  Five current UMBC pre-med students are serving as MERIT mentors this year and we would like to identify more UMBC students to mentor the next cohort of Scholars.

More information about the mentor role and the application can be found on our Get Involved page.  Because the mentoring component lasts through the Scholars' high school graduation, we are primarily looking for freshmen and sophomore undergraduate applicants for the mentor position.  Older students may apply only if they are planning to graduate in May 2014 or later.  The application deadline is Friday, December 2.  <http://www.meritbaltimore.org/get-involved/mentor-a-scholar/>

The deadline is quickly approaching, APPLY TODAY to SERVE.
