Paid Internship at the Horizon Foundation in Columbia, MD

The Horizon Foundation is an independent philanthropy dedicated to improving the health and wellness of people living and working in Howard County, Maryland. We invest in strategic grants and initiatives to achieve the greatest impact in our community. We also build partnerships and advocate for public policy changes that advance our mission.

The Foundation’s current strategic goals are to reduce childhood obesity, expand access to health coverage, and increase access to health care services. The Foundation is looking for two creative and detailed oriented communications interns to work across its program, communications, and grant making activities.

As a Communications Intern with the Horizon Foundation, an intern will work directly with the senior staff of the organization, including our CEO. The intern will have the opportunity to experience firsthand how organizations are using social networks and other online platforms to further their goals as well as interact and engage with diverse stakeholders.  Our intern will be involved in meetings and discussions about the operation and direction of the organization and our programs. Furthermore, they will have an opportunity to do hands on work that will help further our goals and mission. With a staff of only seven, we need to act collaboratively and our interns will be included in that collaboration, as well.

Position Responsibilities:
Interns are assigned tasks that merit their talent and achievement as well as foster an interest in public service and nonprofit management. The position is a supportive role that requires one to work efficiently on both team-based and independent projects.

Projects may include:
•Handle the day-to-day of social media campaigns.
•Assist in planning, writing, and managing eNewsletter.
•Draft, distribute, and pitch news releases, media alerts and other stories.
•Update the Foundation’s website when needed.
•Monitor coverage of the Foundation and related work on blogs and social media channels.
•Write, edit, and post content on the Foundation’s social media channels.
•Expand the Foundation’s digital footprint.
•Create weekly analysis of social media activity/results.
•Collaborate with staff on new ideas, directions, and venues for marketing and communications.

Qualifications:
•Legally capable of working in the United States.
•Ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in English, Marketing/Communications, Public Relations, or related degree with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0.
•Candidate must have exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
•Previous internship or related experience in marketing or communications is a plus.
•Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop highly desired. Knowledge of HTML and graphic design a plus.
•Strong digital footprint (has an appropriate Blog, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn account with appropriate content).
•High energy and flexibility to work in a changing environment.
•Must be highly organized with the ability to multi-task under tight deadlines.
•Candidates should be available to work at least 16-20 hours a week.
•Must have reliable transportation.

Compensation
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. If preferred, college credit may be available depending on the requirements of your college or university.
