K-16 Partnerships In addition to the nationally recognized internship, co-op, and service-learning programs, and award winning and nationally replicated service delivery programs (The Choice Program and the Shriver Peaceworker Program), The Shriver Center is currently involved in a number of innovative projects designed to further UMBC’s commitment to K-12 outreach. National Science Foundation – Vertically Integrated Partnerships (VIP) Wheaton Public High School ’s new Institute for Global and Cultural Studies will allow high school students develop a rigorous and specialized track of study. The Shriver Center partners with UMBC’s Dean of Undergraduate Education, Montgomery College, and the Montgomery County Public School System to provide student and staff support to the creation of this new Academy. National Science Foundation - Enhancing Science & Technology Education & Exploration Mentoring: PI: Dr. Anita Komlodi, Professor, Information Systems, Co-PI: Claudia Morrell, Director, Center for Women and Information Technology. An award of $868,776 from NSF supports the implementation of after school and summer programs designed to teach technology to middle school students. Future Engineers in Dynamic Systems (FEDS) Academy: The Shriver Center partners with Dr. Weidong Zhu, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as part of a National Science Foundation Career Grant. The academy is a summer program for 10 high school juniors or seniors that includes modules on dynamic systems, vibrations, and controls. As Fellows, UMBC STEM students assist K-8 teachers at Federal Hill Prep in Baltimore City with science, technology, engineering, and/or math instruction and activities. Fellows commit 8 hours per week and receive a stipend of $1250 for the semester. For more information on Federal Hill Preparatory please click on the following link http://www.ingenuityproject.org/ingenuity_schools/elem.htm MATHS (Maryland Academy of Technology and Health Sciences): The Shriver Center is partnering with MATHS, a Baltimore City public charter school (grades 8-12), to integrate UMBC STEM students into the classroom setting. UMBC STEM students work with teachers on curriculum development and student support through tutoring. UMBC tutors commit to a minimum of 3 hours of service per week. Baltimore National Academy Foundation (NAF) High School/CitiFinancial: With generous support from The CitiFinancial Group, The Shriver Center is
partnering with administrators and teachers at NAF to enhance high school
students’ performance on the Maryland High School Assessment. UMBC
students serve as “Coaches,” working 3-5 hours a week in enhancing NAF
students’ math and reading comprehension and writing skills. This after
school program’s curriculum was designed by NAFs mathematics consultant. Samuel F.B. Morse Elementary, Dogwood Elementary and Johnnycake Elementary
Schools: The Center continues to reach out to local schools in Baltimore County and Baltimore City to provide UMBC students as resources in
addressing each individual school’s identified needs. Selected students
serve as a Classroom Fellows tutoring/working with students one-on-one or
in small groups in multiplication, reading, writing and other subjects.
Classroom Fellows are required to serve 3-5 hours per week for one
