Description

Background: Walden Circle is a rental community of 300 townhomes in Woodlawn, MD. The Community Center is located in this neighborhood.  Every year we host a summer camp for a select group of neighborhood kids ages 5 to 13.  The camp runs 5 weeks and includes structured and unstructured activities such as planned field trips, outdoor games, and educational but fun classes.

At this time, we are looking for students to provide meals for our campers.  The meals include breakfast at 9:00AM, lunch at 12:00PM and a snack at 3:00PM.  We anticipate that this will be a 30 hour per week position.  Once the snack is ready to be served the cook may finish with their day.

Duties: In conjunction with Walden Circle Summer Camp Staff, the student cook is expected to:
  • Help open the center at 8:00AM,
  • Cook or make breakfast for approximately 35 campers to be served at 9:00AM,
  • Cook or make lunch for approximately 35 campers to be served at 12:00PM,
  • Cook or make a small snack for approximately 35 campers to be served at 3:00PM,
  • Clean up between each meal,
  • Coordinate the cooking efforts of volunteer camper helpers and camp counselors.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have some if not all of the following qualifications:
  • Experience working with children in similar settings (after school programs, class rooms, camps, etc.),
  • A desire to work with children and provide them nutritious meals,
  • Basic cooking skills,
  • The ability to work in a fast pace environment with many activities taking place around the camp,
  • The ability to create a meal plan and schedule,
  • The ability to create a shopping list to produce that meal plan.
There is a lot of flexibility built into this camp, and the primary goal of the WCCC is to provide children with a safe and fun environment to come to during the summer break.  Fresh ideas are welcome and we hope that the person who applies for this position brings something that they are passionate about and wants to share with the children, whether this is related to studies or hobbies.
